A voice was heard in Ramah,
Lamentation, weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children,
Refusing to be comforted,
Because they are no more.
Today we commemorate the Holy Innocents. (Matthew 2:16-18). Sometimes refered to as the first Christian martyrs, for me the 'innocents' are a 'type' of Christ: The guiltless slaughtered for the benefit of the sinful.
In one fashion or another, the world continues to sacrifice the meek and powerless on the altars of fear, greed and ambition. In many ways we continue to victimize those among us least able to defend themselves.
It may be fine to look back on the events of the distant past or of distant (or in some cases not so distant) lands and bemoan the tragedy, but in truth, the only meaningful tribute is to actively seek an end to all violence.
